TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR) – CONSULTANCY FOR DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITATION OF A TRAINING PROGRAM ON GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR THE EU CO-FUNDED ARTXCHANGE PROJECT
Background: The Somali Academy of Science and Arts (SOMASA), CISP and ArtXchange
SOMASA is an independent, non-profit making, professional institution dedicated to research, innovation, and promotion of science and culture. Thanks to the contribution of CISP and the European Union, the Academy resumed its activities in December 2016, after 25 years of inactivity, due to the civil war. The Academy is a strategic partner in the cultural sector in Somalia, as it is the most relevant local institution in the country, with the task of promoting, coordinating, and monitoring actions in the Science and Arts sectors at a national level. Among its core functions, SOMASA provides research leadership in the country and advises the Somali government, the general public, and other stakeholders on cultural heritage Preservation matters. Among its objectives, the Academy promotes, preserves, and protects Somali Cultural heritage and makes it a foundation for Somalia’s development goals.
SOMASA is an implementing partner in a Culture project targeting Youth (ArtXchange – Connecting Creative Youth in Africa and Europe) led by CISP and co-funded by the European Union (EU). The project is focused on enhancing inclusion, empowerment, and connection of youth in the creative sector in Africa and Europe by supporting young creative professionals, CSOs, and organizations and promoting Collaboration, capacity building, and exchanges in Kenya, Somalia, Italy, and Sweden.
Consultancy Objectives:
The ArtXchange project seeks the use of innovative methodologies in training and capacity building, collaborations, partnerships, and networking to create linkages and learning platforms that will embrace all youths in the creative sector in Mogadishu and connect them with their peers in Africa and Europe. The purpose of this assignment will be to develop a program, train and orient the youth in Somalia on Graphic Design Skills increasing their access to new methodologies and innovative practices mixing the Somali tradition with the contemporary culture.
The Somali Academy of Science and Arts (SOMASA) seeks an experienced facilitator/s to develop and deliver a 3 hour 1 session training for 4 weeks (in person) (Thursdays and Fridays off), for approximately 20/25 youth (60% women) from 18 to 35 years old based in Mogadishu.
The learning objectives of the graphic design workshop are for the youth to create visual concepts, posters, brochures, flyers, packaging, logos, branding, and marketing materials, combine art and technology to communicate ideas through images or printed pages, and much more. The workshop has to educate the youth to explore the connection between self-expression, creativity, and ideas. The workshop has to allow Somali Youth to think out of the box and come up with unique approaches to communicate with customers. Training proposal should include innovative elements and ensure a high-quality learning opportunity for artistic and professional development.
Deliverables:
- Prepare training agenda, curriculum, materials, and resource guide.
- Participate in planning meetings with SOMASA, CISP Somalia and CISP Kenya planning committee.
- 3 hour 1 session training for 4 weeks for approximately 20/25 participants.
- Provide assistance and guidance to participants.
- Conduct a debrief session and present a Report after the training.
- Share weekly reports with SOMASA.
Timeline:
- 2 days consultation on program and agenda and participants selection
- 3 hour 1 session training for 4 weeks (Thursdays and Fridays off) (approximately from 15th of February)
- 2 days debrief sessions and Final Report
Qualifications, experiences
- Expertise in design skills and knowledge.
- Deep understanding of graphic design skills as a training technique – at least 4 years experience.
- Passion for the promotion of equity, diversity and accessibility in the Art and Cultural Sector.
- Excellent communication, active listening and facilitation skills.
- Knowledge of media production and communication.
- strong presentation, verbal, visual, and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated training experience in diverse teams and experience with various organizations
- Effectively facilitates power dynamics and difficult conversations in group settings.
- Fluency in verbal and written Somali.
Preferred Additional Expertise
- the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas
- Knowledge of the Somali context
